Description

High alpine hut to hut traverse on and around the Grossglockner.  A classic „Haute Route“, one of the best you can make in the Austrian Alps and in the area of the Grossglockner. The traverse from the Schwaiger hut to the Oberwalder hut and next day to the Stüdl hut is only one of the many high lights of this trip.

Tour

Day 1: Kaprun – Mooserboden- Schwaiger Haus

We meet at 2 pm at the Gasthaus Kesselfall. From there we go up to the Lärchenwand cable car. After the lift a bus takes us further up to the dam of the Mooserboden lake. The dams were built after the second world war and visitors from all over the world go there to look at the power station. From there we walk up to the Heinrich Schwaiger Haus.
Walking time: 2 h, meters to go: + 700 m

Day 2: Schwaiger hut – Wiesbachhorn – Oberwalder hut

Early in the morning we start after breakfast towards the Oberwalder Hütte. We follow the path up to the Wiesbachhorn and arrive the glacier after one hour. After we roped up the summit of the Hintere Bratschenkopf comes in sight. If the weather is good we climb the Wiesbachhorn. Via the summit of the Klockerin we get to the bivi hut on the Gruber Scharte. From there the Oberwalder Hütte is about 2 hours to go.
Walking time: 7 h, meters to go: +900 m / – 600 m

Day 3: Oberwalder Hütte – Stüdl Hütte

We spend the whole day on the upper „Pasterze“ glacier. We rope up right at the hut and off we go towards the Romariswandkopf. The Grossglockner is allways next to us. The north ridge of the Romariswandkopf is our first short technical section on the trip. After a break on the summit it only goes downward to the newley built Stüdl Hütte, where we spend the night.
Walking time: 6 h, meters to go: +600 m / -700 m

Day 4: Stüdl Hütte – Grossglockner – Adlersruhe Hut

We climb on top of austria’s highest peak – the Grossglockner. But first we have to make it up to the „Adlersruhe“ (3454 m), where we stay for the night after the climb.  The „Glocknerleitl“ is the last snowfield before we get to the south ridge, which takes us up to the roof of Austria. The „Glocknerscharte“ is the last step prior to the summit. From the iron cross on top we can enjoy the beautiful view from the Bohemian Forrest in the north to the Dolomites in the south.  To the hut we get back in about 2 hours.
Walking time: 6 h, meters to go: +1000 m / -350 m

Day 5: „Adlersruhe“ hut – Oberwalder Hütte

A relativly easy day. In the morning we go down to the „Pasterze“, austrias biggest glacier. The way up to the Oberwalder Hütte is easy and we spend a second night up here.
Walking time: 5 h, meters to go: -1100 m / +700 m

Day 6: Oberwalder Hütte – Johannisberg – Hohe Riffl – Kaprun

Today the Johannisberg and the Hohe Riffl are on the list to be climbed. After that we descent via the Kärlinger glacier to the dam of lake Mooserboden , where we started our trip a few days ago. While eating Kaffee und Kuchen (Cafe and Cake) we review the past days on the glaciers and hights of the Grossglockner area.
Walking time: 5 h, meters to go: +350 m / -1200 m
